A former pro basketball player and Massachusetts sports legend, Chris is one of the premier motivational speakers in the country.
Born in Fall River, Mass., Chris was the Massachusetts High School Player of the Year three years in a row and played college basketball at Boston College and Fresno State University. He was drafted by the Denver Nuggets and played for two years in the National Basketball Association for the Nuggets and the Boston Celtics. He also played seven seasons overseas.
Chris struggled with drug addiction for much of his basketball career, which was documented in his bestselling memoir, “Basketball Junkie,” and the Emmy nominated ESPN Films documentary, “UnGuarded,” directed by Jonathan Hock. He’s been sober since Aug. 1, 2008, and now travels the country sharing his inspirational story of recovery.
He’s also the founder of The Herren Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing treatment navigation, educational and mentoring programs to those touched by addiction and to educate people of all ages on the dangers of substance abuse. In 2012, The Herren Project launched a national anti-substance abuse campaign, Project Purple, to encourage people to stand up to substance abuse.
Chris founded Herren Wellness to provide services to those seeking to improve their lives and prevent the development of substance use and behavioral health disorders. The centers use a holistic approach that promotes physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Herren Wellness is opening its first location in spring 2018.
Chris’ inspirational story has been featured in countless local, national and international media outlets, including CNN, The New York Times, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, NBC News, Sports Illustrated, Bleacher Report and The Fix, among others. He resides in Portsmouth, R.I. with his wife and three children.
Lori has 15 years of experience in the Addiction industry.
She was the Chief Marketing Officer and Clinical Outreach Director at Gosnold on Cape Cod, an addiction and mental healthcare organization offering prevention, intervention, treatment and integrative recovery management services. As a member of the Senior Management team, Lori played a major role in developing and implementing many of Gosnold’s innovative programs to advance the prevention and treatment of addictive disease. Among them was the award-winning recovery management program, which received the Tufts Health Plan Innovation Award in 2014.
Most recently, she led the effort to implement a hospital emergency room opiate intervention service at South Shore Hospital. Using Gosnold Recovery Specialists, this program was developed to support ER medical staff in response to the opioid crisis by initiating treatment referrals for substance use disorder patients.
Lori also has extensive marketing experience and has been featured in a variety of major media outlets including the Associated Press, Boston Magazine, the Boston Globe, NECN and several radio stations.
Lori is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor and a Certified Arise Family Interventionist. She is currently Co-Chair of the HinghamCARES Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition.
Lori has four children and lives in Hingham, MA
Heather and her husband co-founded Hoop Dreams with Chris Herren, Inc., in 2009. Hoop Dreams with Chris Herren offers customized basketball training as well as motivational speaking engagements nationwide. In 2011, Chris and Heather founded The Herren Project, a non-profit organization that provides treatment and recovery resources for individuals and families seeking help for addiction. Heather has vast personal and professional experience in dealing with addiction. She is focused on the importance of family in the recovery process and has counseled, educated and comforted those in need through The Herren Project.
Heather holds a B.A., Magna Cum Laude, and an M.A. Education in Counseling with high honors, from Providence College. She was featured alongside Chris in the Emmy-nominated 2011 ESPN documentary “Unguarded,” and has been profiled by a variety of local and national news outlets, including Fox News Channel. Heather and Chris have three children, and reside in Portsmouth, RI.
Christine will oversee life coaching and the customized wellness plans at Herren Wellness at Jacob Hill. She is a certified trainer in Whole Health Action Management with Integrated Health Solutions under the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Council for Behavioral Health. She is also a Rhode Island Certified Peer Recovery Specialist who worked as a treatment team advisor, educator and program developer for East Bay Community Action Programs, The Providence Center, RICares and Rhode Island Hospital.
Prior to her work in the prevention, treatment and recovery field, Christine was a program manager at Salve Regina University where she developed and implemented an extensive continuing education curriculum. In addition, Christine spent 15 years in the airline industry managing operations for Vanguard, American, and Northwest Airlines.
Christine has four children and lives in Portsmouth, RI.
Margaret is a highly skilled and accomplished nurse who has spent her career working on addiction and recovery. She has held positions as a Clinical Educator and Clinical Coordinator at Falmouth Hospital, at the Stanford University Medical Center’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, and Boston University Medical Center. She has presented regionally and nationally on addiction and addiction treatment. In 2013 she received the “Addiction Professional Outstanding Clinician” award from the National Conference on Addictive Disorders and was recognized by the Massachusetts Association of Behavioral Health for her innovative work to improve care of addiction patients in general hospitals. She’s also been featured in local and regional news outlets, including the Boston Globe and Cape Cod Times.
Most recently, she was chief nursing officer at Gosnold on Cape Cod, where she had also worked as a staff nurse and pretreatment clinical specialist. At Herren Wellness at Jacob Hill, Margaret will serve as an advisor and educator and will oversee admissions. She holds a B.A. in Nursing from Northeastern University.
