Chris Herren

A former pro basketball player and Massachusetts sports legend, Chris is one of the premier motivational speakers in the country.

Born in Fall River, Mass., Chris was the Massachusetts High School Player of the Year three years in a row and played college basketball at Boston College and Fresno State University. He was drafted by the Denver Nuggets and played for two years in the National Basketball Association for the Nuggets and the Boston Celtics. He also played seven seasons overseas.

Chris struggled with drug addiction for much of his basketball career, which was documented in his bestselling memoir, “Basketball Junkie,” and the Emmy nominated ESPN Films documentary, “UnGuarded,” directed by Jonathan Hock. He’s been sober since Aug. 1, 2008, and now travels the country sharing his inspirational story of recovery.

He’s also the founder of The Herren Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing treatment navigation, educational and mentoring programs to those touched by addiction and to educate people of all ages on the dangers of substance abuse. In 2012, The Herren Project launched a national anti-substance abuse campaign, Project Purple, to encourage people to stand up to substance abuse.

Chris founded Herren Wellness to provide services to those seeking to improve their lives and prevent the development of substance use and behavioral health disorders. The centers use a holistic approach that promotes physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Herren Wellness is opening its first location in spring 2018.

Chris’ inspirational story has been featured in countless local, national and international media outlets, including CNN, The New York Times, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, NBC News, Sports Illustrated, Bleacher Report and The Fix, among others. He resides in Portsmouth, R.I. with his wife and three children.
